Ancient healers and modern doctors
In ancient times, knowledge was acquired physically through the body since the body was an instrument in which all the experiential and existential understanding took place. These experiences were then translated into the language prevalent in those times by the sages. The lifestyles of people living 2000 years ago and in the year 2009 cannot even be compared, forget having similarities. Nowadays, knowledge is acquired mentally with little experiential understanding at the physical level. All the ancient teachings have to be translated into body language if they are to be understood in a modern context. This is the only way of understanding the scriptures and teachings of the past.
The captains of the health industry, i.e. the doctors, are trained through a tough course of studying the parameters of human mind-body. They put in a lot of effort (and money) to study medicine. They are trained in the medical sciences by studying other beings. Most of their study is on the dead organism. To make matters worse, the era of specialization has taken priority, where each doctor will deal with just one small area of the body; (s)he is not concerned with the other areas of the organism. To begin with, the development of modern medicine is based on the understanding of dividing the study of the mind and the body separately. One branch has developed into psychology and the other into the study of physiology.
The ancient healers were the sages and saints who dealt with the whole organism as a product of mind-body. When a person went to them with a specific problem, their advice came from their wisdom by taking the whole organism into consideration. Medicines were made from natural elements and as per individual need and dosage. They were not packaged for mass consumerism. Health was not an industry in ancient times.
