Taking Responsibility of our health
The body-mind is constantly changing; with awareness, we can give direction to the change, we can allow the body to heal itself. Without taking responsibility for our own health, we cannot expect to be healthy. We cannot blame the doctors for their lack of sensitivity; the patients have to take responsibility of their own health.
Modern doctors can and should play a pivotal role in this process of helping their patients to heal themselves. They have to become healers like the sages and rishis of ancient times. To become healers, the doctors must first understand that they are also humans and not believe that they are gods. If we listen to most doctors, they really scare the patients. They pass judgments. They give ultimatums. Some examples of their judgments that I have heard from them: ‘If you do not do the knee operation, you might lose your leg,’ or ‘If you do not fuse your vertebrae, you will have to change your profession,’ or ‘If you do not do a bypass surgery, you will die’ (as if, they can guarantee that the patient will live for 100 years after the bypass). Most of these doctors thrive by instilling fear or guilt in the minds of their patients as well as in those of their families.
Such ruthless and egoistic behaviour takes its roots when these doctors go through their medical education. They themselves do not understand their body because they fail miserably at working with it and don’t have a firsthand experience. All their education is on a dead body. Looking closely at most doctors and observing their lifestyles, we can see how far they are from the science they are preaching. To hide their ignorance they become arrogant. Most of them do not walk their talk. I have seen many of them smoking and drinking but advising their patients against it. There are many who advise their patients to drink alcohol (labeled as medicinal drinking). It is rare to find a doctor who is fit and healthy. The modern healers must also work on healing themselves so that they can help others in the healing process.
